Boxmoor campaigners resist ‘spaceship’ development overlooking Moor

Plans to build a fifteen story glass high rise, dubbed the spaceship buy locals, have failed to lift off in Boxmoor.

Angry locals launched the Keep Boxmoor Beautiful campaign after receiving letters from the developer on Tuesday informing them of a public consultation - to take place just two days later - on plans to build the block at 499 London Road overlooking Station Moor.

Campaigners launched a Facebook page on Thursday night and by Sunday they had over 1,300 online supporters plus over 1,000 signatures on a petition aimed at Mike Penning MP and local council officers. You can sign the petition here.

The Council says that that no planning applications had been made and and that the developer was simply fulfilling its duties to consult on plans.

The campaign is wary, believing there is a will, on the part of the council, to develop London Road. They point to feasibility studies as far back as 2010 and being formally identified as being subject to redevelopment in its Site Allocations 2014.

Labour campaigned during the election on the impact that developments such as the 900 homes promised for Pouchen End behind Chaulden will have on the town because they won’t provide enough school places or doctors surgeries to meet demand. It’s our view that money deals are driving these developments without proper plans for infrastructure like schools, roads, public and health services.
